Hello,

I'm currently using the NTBackup utility to back up my system partition. I'm currently wondering, what exactly does the System State option back up concerning system files?

Considering I have my documents/data and the Program Files directory on another partition (and backed up of course), is it necessary to back up any other files on the System partition C: in order to be able to fully restore my computer in case of disaster?

Thanks,

...yes, but by "boot files"/"system files", would that include, for example, any files placed in the Windows or system32 directory by a program during installation?

And I don't quite understand the article; by "entire system" do they include data such as what would be in the user profiles and the Program Files? So, is the System State backup, along with a copy of practically everything except what is in C:\WINDOWS sufficient to restore the whole system into working order in the case of disaster?

The System State data does not represent the entire system volume, the backup is strictly for the registry hives and critical system files needed to boot and load windows correctly in case things go awry.

What I and some others do is to use a drive cloning/image software, with that you can restore the entire C: partition when and if disaster struck.
