Personally, I'm a fan of the WUBI installation. Do you have a specific Linux version in mind? I recommend Linux Mint 10. Download the ISO file from the Mint website, then burn it to a disk using IMGBurn or any other burning program capable of handling ISO files. Once you have the disk created, you simply install it from within Windows just as you would any other program. In other words, just place the disk in the disk drive & wait for the menu to pop up. Select "Install inside Windows" & follow the instructions. When the installation is complete, remove the disk & reboot. You'll then be greeted with a dual boot menu & will be able to select either XP or Mint. If you decide you don't like Mint, all you need to do is boot into XP & uninstall it using Control Panel > Add or Remove.
