How can I logon to a Netware network with the Novell Client 32 on Windows XP Pro without creating all the users locally? I just want to let use all the network users different Windows XP workstations. We have about 150 users so I don't want to creat them all first.

Well.. One way to do it would be to create
one user on the server and then make sure
that the number of connections this user
can have isn't limited and have everyone
log in as that user.

you don't understand M.Poppe's question. I currently have the same issue, i'm trying to find out a way to bypass the WinXP logon box when login to Novell. If you have like 250 or more users on Novell, it's impossible for you to create all these users on each WinXP workstation on your lan !

The problem i have is the same as M.Poppe, i wnat my users to log in Novell and that's it, no WindowsXP logon.

I've search on Novell Website and they're talking about a adminautologon for every workstation so any user who log at the workstation could enter with their respective username and password but i havent find the way to set it up...

anyone who know, email me !

Go to Novell's website and download the client for win xp. Then you will login through the client or check the 'workstation only' box to bypass the network. This will make the xp logon go by-by. You need to load the client on all the xp workstations. Depending on what OS people are running, determines which client to use. For people on xp its version 4.83.

thank god, other people are having the same problem as me.
What I would like is for the Novell login to CREATE a windows XP user profile, with the same username and password used in the initial Novell login.
When a person would login to novell the second time, it would automatically enter that username and password to windows XP.

Right now even if I create a user's profile in windows XP, after they login to Novell, the Novell client attempts to use the Windows XP login username of the last computer user to log in to windows, and it requests a password because of course the Novell one they provided doesnt work with someone elses windows username!!

AGHHHH!!!!
How do I fix this!!???
If you can help me, on all of the windows desktops in my computer lab I will put "[your name] is a God".

Jamis, not sure if I understand your problem, but.......try this. In the lower rite corner of your desktop you should see a Red letter "N", standing for Novell. Rite clik the 'N' and go to "Novell Client Properties". Go to the "Location Profiles" tab. Under 'Location Profiles' you should see the word "Default". Clik it once, to select it, and then clik the 'properties' button. In the next window, clik the 'properties' button again. In the next window, uncheck the box that says "save profile after successful login". Hope this is what you're looking for. If it is, I'll send you my full name so you can carve it in stone over the door of your computer lab. Out of curiosity, where are you located? University? Good luck, let us know what happens.

Everyone!!! I found the solution!!!

But first...
DonaldK,
I am an undergraduate student employee at the University of Minnesota Dept. of Psychology. I am one of four student I.T. employees (each with our areas of expertise) for the dept., working under two I.S. staff managers. My area is multimedia equipment (high-tech, like turnkey non-linear video editing) and PC software. I also manage the "MultiMedia Laboratory".

Thanks a ton for the response; I haven't tried your suggestion yet, but it sounds as though that may solve the problem of Novell trying to log into the Windows XP user profile of the last computer user. (that is; if I log into novell as user 'jamis' password 'jamis', then get prompted by windows for a username and password where I enter the same things...then log out of windows, and the next person who attempts to login to the Novell screen as 'scott' password 'scott' will be assaulted by a windows dialogue box saying that the password they entered was incorrect for user profile 'jamis'.)

The real solution:
Our problem is that Novell will not create a Windows XP user profile automatically for a person when they first sit down at a computer and login to Novell (before entering windows). Instead, we administrators have to create an XP profile for each Novell user.

The solution is to create an "Associated Policy Package" in NWadmin. You must create a policy which will make a successful Novell Login create a limited (or administrative) Windows XP user profile matching the username and password entered into Novell.
Once you create this policy, open up NWadmin. Go into a user's account, then go to associated policy packages, and add that policy to a user.
There is probably a way to add the policy to a large number of users at once, but I dont know how. Instead, it would be a good idea to merely add the policy as a matter of course when initially creating a user in Novell.

I hope this helps everyone!! Yay!

Jamis, where and how do you "create the policy" for the user? Does this policy have info like what the user sees on the desktop, what drives they can or cannot see, where they can save files too, etc.? Thanks for more info. I might be interested in doing the same thing at my computer lab at the University of Pennsylvania. Glad you solved your problem.

I think you have to have ZEN Works installed to get the "Associated Policy Package" options. ZENworks give you more options with roaming profiles and client desktop management. Now - if someone could figure out how to do it without ZENworks...

I work for a small college and we are using Novell 4.1. I am having the same problem as everyone else with the Windows XP Pro logon even after using the autologin. I have even tried TweakXP. That allows you to manipulate anything from your desktop to the control panel and the registery. Is there anyway I can get around this without upgrading to Novell 5 and Zen works.

Hello,
I would like to do just the opposite of everyone else. I would like to force a Windows login in screen to come up when you log into Novell under a generic user account called “Guest”. If you logon as any other username and password you get the prompt to login to the workstation but not under the "guest" login.

The problem that I have found is that when you have a "guest" generic login account for Novell you automatically are put into a user group that I have set up in Windows XP. What I want is to enable the choice of logging into another user groups on the Windows XP workstation, such as Admin, guest, nurses, and ECT. Under the "guest" login you don't have that option as Novell and Windows see it as the default Guest user in Windows XP (I think).

Does anyone have any idea on how to force the Windows XP login to come up no matter what username you use for Novell Client. I am using the newest Novell version and all the patches.

The solution we have found lies in creating a single user on WinXP with a name and password.

This name is stored in the location profile of Netware properties in the Windows box (client 4.83 sp1). The user then logs on to Novell with their own user & password then windows asks for the password for user XXX.

This means the users have to remember 2 passwords - the standard one & Novell one.

This will also solve the problem of software "disappearing" from one user to the next (or having to install a copy for each user).

Any problems please contact me.
