I am a little (more or less very)conserned with one program. My notpad, I am learning how to creat basic html so I need this program, however about 4 days ago it stopped working. When i click on it i get nothing. So i did some poking around and now i am wondering should the target be dorected at a file called actmovie.exe within the windows system32? I am using McAfee with all the updates and have detected nothing. however with my other tools I have found sevral issues. Is this a virus or worm? or just the name of the file... if so why did they chose actmovie of all names for notpad? thanks for all or any help you may have. (oh also I can no longer read the body of my mail via outlook just hte headers.. if that means anything)

I had the same problem. I scanned my computer with a virus scanned 3 times also used spybot search and destroy but found no reason why it would change the notepad to actmovie.exe I did however change the path so it goes to the proper notepad.exe file.
Still im wondering what caused this.

I experienced exactly the same thing this weekend on my Dell machine which runs XP. An application went looking for NotePad and said it could not find it. I went to my shortcut for NotePad and clicked it but Notepad would not open. I checked the target file for the Shortcut and it was ACTMOVIE.exe !!! My Norton antivirus is 2002, but it finds nothing, so I went to WWW.FREE-AV.COM and did an online scan...nothing. Went to TrendMicro and did an online scan with "House Call"....nothing. Also went to Pest Patrol and did an online scan. It turned up a bunch of cookies but am not so sure this is an issue. I am still wondering what occurred.

I had same problem. My Explorer Home Page was hijacked to Autosearch each time I restarted Explorer. Spybot fixed the problem. Then anti virus found /Windows/scvhost.exe a Trojan (DO NOT CONFUSE WITH /Windows32/SVCHOST)
Spare copy of Notepad in /Windows copied to /Windows32 then right clicked on Notepad in Programs/Accesories and changed target. Also truned off System Restore (Control Panel/System) this deletes old restore points that were infected.
Remember to update Spybot etc. before scanning. Then turn System Restore back on. I think actmovie is a legit file.

Same here. actmovie.exe turned up in my notepad shortcut. Also nothing in the body of my e-mails (have to forward them then open the attachment to read it) found actmovie in win 95 cab 20 if that means anything. can not delete it or overwrite it.
Notepad can be found in 2 places one c:\windows other c:\windows\system32 believe
actmovie replaced the systewm 32 one with itself(a worm of a type) Anyone have a solution for the e-mail body problem?

Same problem here.
No Notepad, trying to redirect the target fails and reverts to actmovie.exe...
Any help would be greatly appreciated.
As I rarely use notepad, I hadn't noticed the Icon for Notepad had changed to the standard "blank screen" icon.
From Notepad's ptoperties I found this;
Type of file: Shortcut
Description: DirectShow Setup ToolLocation: C:\Documents and Settings\Jeff\Start Menu\Programs\Accessories
The Created and modified dates and times match the approximate time I tried using Download Accelerator Plus to download Adobe Photoshop 7.1 update. When I returned to the 'puter there was an error window tat involved "incomplete download..." so I then used normal download procedure.
Now the Photoshop update "cannot find Adobe Photoshop 7 in C:\ProgramFiles\Adobe\Photoshop7"
So I tried to open a README doc and discovered the issue with Notepad.
Sorry for the long explanation but I hope it helps someone notice a common pre-issue event or figure out a fix.

I had a similar problem with my notepad after I was infected with the TMKSoft.XPlugin adware virus.
To remove the adware, I followed Symantec removal instructions.
http://sarc.com/avcenter/venc/data/adware.tmksoft.xplugin.html
To correct the problem (after getting rid of the adware), I had to reset the target for notepad.exe in my Start->Programs->Accessories->Notepad icon back to notepad.exe in the Windows folder (not in system32). I also had to reset the following setting in the registry:
HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\Applications\notepad.exe\shell\open\command
where I had to change to default entry from %SystemRoot%\system32\NOTEPAD.exe %1 back to %SystemRoot%\NOTEPAD.exe %1
Note that this adware also placed a fake notepad.exe file in the system32 folder (which is where it had redirected the default text handling application), so I also had to delete another registry settings:
I had to remove HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\PROTOCOLS\Filter\text/html
The adware had also put a proxy server setting in the registry at HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Internet Settings which referred to web pages (home-search.com and lender-home.com). I deleted the entry, so I don't quite remember, but I think that's what the web pages were.
