I have am jor windows xp problem. It was workign fine one day when the next, it doesnt. I log in and it loads everything but when i click start and clock on something, even right click on the desktop, everything freezes. The mouse still moves but everthing freezes, i cant do anything. I tried it in safe mode and i can open programs. Interent explorer and system restore cant open becasue of error. I also encountered this a couple of days ago but used mozilla. Could this be it beacuse it looks for updates and interent explorer doesnt work. Safe mode had no auto update and it works fine. Should i reistall windows to make this work in non safe mode.

sorry for my spelling, was in a rush:
I have a major windows xp problem. It was working fine one day when the next, it doesnt. you can disable automatic updates (rightclick on my computer, properties, automatic updates, turn off automatic updates on all drives ... then run services.msc and disable the windows update service - all this can be done in safe mode) and see if this is to any avail.
Today's subliminal thought is: 'Calm down ... it's only ones and zeros.'

There are a couple of things to look at
* press ctrl\alt\del. Press the radio button that lists applications. If there is an application that is shown as "not responding". See if you can end that application. If nothing is shown then press the "process" button and any process that is listed under a user name try to end that process and then test your desktop to see if it is now working. try the next process until you get a result.
* under safe mode go to "run" and type "msconfig". Press the "startup" button and uncheck the first item and reboot. do this for each item until you get a good result.
* do the same as above but go to selective start up and uncheck an item and see how boot up goes. Also go to "boot.ini" and check "bootlog". Have a look at the bootlog for any hangups.
* try sfc /scannow in the run box whilst in safe mode.
* in safe mode go to start-settings-control panel-administrative tools-event viewer-system. In the event viewer you may see the problem that is causing the "hang" and it will give you an idea where to go next.
Someone else may have better ideas but this is what I would do. maybe not in that order though.

i checked and the hang i think is caused by explorer. It has a red x near it when i did the event logger. Windows needs to be reintalled im assuming,

try ctrl-alt-del and go to "applications". Then press "new task"; then type "explorer.exe" hit return and see if that fixes the problem. If it is explorer causing the hang then sfc /scannow should replace the system file that is causing it. You'll probably need your installation CD to fix it at that time. Remember type:
sfc (space)/scannow

I got it to work. I did the sfc /scannow and i iserted the xp disc. fixed it. Explorer and system restore aswell as the hang are all fixed. Thanks...
