nothing opens

my computer will only open windows media player and internet explorer, all of the 'MY' (eg, music, documents) and control panel will not open. when i double click on their icons, the desktop reloads and they refuse to open. i have scanned with norton and it deletes what it can. any ideas anyone?

have tried all the above and nothing is helping, i downloaded the association fixes but my computer would not let me open them! another example of my problem is that when i press the START button nothing on the right hand side will open eg all the 'my' options, control panel, search etc. i have sidestepped the problem by opening the programs that run the files i need access to first. however trying to access them through the folders in which they lie results in my screen reseting and as if i hadnt made them request to open them. anyone got any more ideas??? its laughably annoying that i cant access 'my computer' by clicking on it!!!
