One of the options of my HP laserjet printer is print to file. But when I try to open it with Notepad or Word, its all garbled. What software will enable me to read this prn file?

The only thing you can do with a prn file is send it to a printer. I contains all the printer codes that the printer uses to format the document.
I you want the document to be opened in Notepad you need to install a plain text print driver. Look for Generic Text/Only print driver the Windows printers list and set that to print to file.

I also had this problem, when I didn't have a printer in my own computer but my mom had. I had a program that worked only with my computer, and I had to print from that program. So, I thought it would be easy to "print to file" and take those files downstairs and print with my mom's printer. I also got prn files and I could do nothing with them, I tried dropping the prn file icon on the printer icon, but nothing happened. What is the use of "print to file" -option anyway, if it doesn't work that way?

That will only work if you have the same printer driver installed on your computer that your mother has on her computer.
The file contains information relevant only to the printer that it was designed to be used on.

I did have the exact same printer drivers installed, but I couldn't do anything with the prn files.

Go to cmd prompt and type
Print /d:LPT1 Filename.prn
That if the printer is on the parallel port. If it is USB replace Prn1 with the name of the USB device which can be got from the printer configuration.
