Notepad is no longer on my "open with" list. When I browse to find it, click on notepad, nothing happens. Notepad files will not open with notepad by double clicking them to open. They will open with Wordpad. I can open Notepad through Accessories>notepad, then click File and select the notepad file to open, it will open that way. But I can't double click the notepad file and have it open!! How do I get this funtion back?

JoniXP, What's the file extension (.txt, etc.) of the files you're trying to open with notepad? Tufenuf
It's .txt. It was created with notepad.
JoniXP, There should be a copy of notepad.exe in both your C:\Windows folder & your C:\Windows\System32 folder. If either are missing copy and paste a copy in the folder where it's missing. Then see if it works. There is somw malware that meeses with notepad.exe. Tufenuf
Tufenuf, Thanks, There's no notepad.exe in my system32 folder. How do I copy notepad.exe to system32 and which notepad.exe do I copy? When I run a search for files and folders named notepad, a lot of them come up.
JoniXP, Use Windows Explorer (not Internet Explorer) and open your C:\Windows folder. Locate notepad.exe and right click it and choose Copy then open your C:\Windows\System32 folder and in the right side pane just right click on an empty area and choose paste. Tufenuf
Tufenuf,
Cancel my last post, because I got it to work! I did like you said and copied a notepad.exe to system32 folder and now everything is working OK. Thank you so much!! Take care.
JoniXP, Glad to see that the problem is fixed and Thanks for posting back to let us know. Tufenuf
Tufenuf, I am back again. HELP! I am still having problems with notepad. When I try to save a notepad file, it will not save. *.txt appears as the file name. But if I change the file name to anything else, for example to "Test", then it will save it and reopen again. Why will it not save if I don't specify a filename?
I've had the same problem as JoniXP.. which was due to mistaken deletion's of false positive's. After complete repair and running sfc, I cannot save in Notepad. According to screenshot of fp's, it also deleted notepad.exe in C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM32\DLLCACHE\notepad.exe. I do not see it there. Does this need to be replaced also? This has been a VERY long journey.. any help would be appreciated.
