Specs: Windows Vista
Hello DAVEINCAPS, XpUser4Real, or anyone else,

Do you know how to fix the notepad problem?

After last time I reinstalled Windows ME and updated it to Windows XP, I had encountered another problem with using the notepad.

I can open the notepad but can't use it at all.

Have you had this kind of problem before? Do you know how to fix it?

Thank you.

Try here:

You want # 326 Restore Notepad.exe

See if that helps.

Hello Mike,

Thank you for your help.

I tried, but it didn't work. It is a zip folder. When I opened the folder, there was only one file (the notepad). I clicked the file; it was a new notepad that I couldn't type anything in it, either.

Did I miss anything?

Thank you.

The file is a replacement Notepad.exe

After you unzip the file place the resulting Notepad.exe in the C:\Windows directory replacing the old notepad.exe.

It seems your notepad file is corrupted along with some other files attached to it.

If the above solution by Mike didnt help, download a new notepad application called Notepad ++

Click the Download Now button

Install that application and if that runs and you can type in it, keep that as your default notepad program.

Let me know how it works out for you.

If the new copy of Notepad also gives you problems, try this:

click RUN
Type in: sfc /scannow

You will probably need the Winxp Vista CD in order to fix any corrupted windows system files, found by the scan.

You could also try copying the new Notepad.exe to the
C:\WINDOWS\system32 directory and replace the old notepad.exe that also exists there.

Thank you Mike and osaeed09 for your help.

I tried everything Mike suggested to me, none of them worked. Maybe they are not for Windows ME/XP?

Notepad application suggested by osaeed09 worked very well. How can I make it as a default notepad?

I like the original notepad; if anyone else has a way to fix the original notepad, I would appreciate your help.

Once more, thank you Mike and osaeed09 for your help.

One last try.

Go back here:

You want # 183 View Source - Restore Notepad as Default

It is a reg entry so just download and save the REG File to your hard disk. It will have a .reg extension.
Double click it and answer yes to the import prompt.

It will modify your registry entry for notepad and perhaps reestablish it.

Just so you can check:

Notepad.exe needs these supporting .dll files to run:

Shell32.dll, Kernel32.dl, User32.dll, Gdi32.dll, Comdlg32.dll, and Advapi.dll.

Make sure you have them all and if you find that you need one try here:
