For about a year now I've had a problem with my computer lagging for no real reason. It happened shortly after adding a new harddrive and installing the Sims 2 University. I was able to score a copy of XP and formatted my C drive about 6 months ago or so thinking that might fix the problem, but no it still goes on. I even tried unhooking the new harddrive and just using the old one to see if maybe it was the new harddrive, but again nothing. I had read something on here about the sasser virus and how it can do things like this, but not get picked up on spyware or antivirus. I suppose it could be this but I assumed after formatting my windows drive that it would have taken care of that. My computer lags on just about any game including The Sims 2, old games from like 99, and even some text based games. Any help with this would be very much appreciated. Thanks.

I'm not really sure what it is that your computer is or isn't doing.

Does anyone know if it could be hardware related? Video Card? Power Supply? Mother Board? Processor? Thanks again.

Well, I have The Sims 2 and it lags for me. It's probably your graphics card you may have your GHz refresh rate too high, or when your playing sims check what you have the graphics set on if there set to high it may be causing the lag, or it could alos be lack of space, multi tasking, downloading something, having another game running.

I was just using the Sims as an example of something my computer should(and did) run fairly easily. I can't run any game now without major lag. Games I use to play with ease like Dungeon Siege and KOTOR no longer can be played because of the crazy slow down and jumpiness.

What is your Compaq Model number ??
Mine is a Presario 5320US.

With mine I find that my video card does not meet the System Requirements of about 90% of any
game on the market.

Only thoughts I have is to try the following to see what is slowing you down--

Have you tried updating the drivers for the graphics card?

512mb ram should be OK, so it could be lag from the video ram.

Have you tried de-fragging your hard drive to see if that improves anything, also, as always, make sure you have the latest graphich drivers installed.
