How do I disable (and enable) the search INSIDE zipfiles, in Windows Explorer on XP ?

Example; when I know a file may be on the filesystem, but NOT inside a zipfile, I would like to disable that function.

In the case I have my, large zipfiles on my system, I see my Windows taking ages to complete a search, which is unnecessary, since I only want to look on the name of a file (zipfile), not the content.

Hi there.

Disable Indexing would be my first suggestion.

And, always check Google first:

You have to enable/disable XP's support for compressed files.

If the integrated Zip support within Windows XP is enabled, then the OS treats zip files just like any other file when searching. So, if you do not want XP to search within Zip files you can disable the integrated OS support and use a 3rd party application for working with Zip files.

Well, I can tell you that using a non-MS tool to open Zipfiles, does not make the search of MS explorer NOT go into the zipfiles ... Whatever system MS uses to search INTO zipfiles, when doing MS Explorer Search, is not linked to .Zip-file extension/application linkage.

You are correct, using a 3rd party tool to open zip files does not prevent XP from searching zip files.

BUT - removing native zip file support in XP (as I already stated) DOES prevent searching in zip files.

The reason I stated the use of a 3rd part app is that if you remove native zip support in XP it WILL prevent searching in zip files, but it will also prevent you from being able to use zip files at all. UNLESS you install a 3rd party zip utility.

So removing zip support from XP would be pointless unless you installed a 3rd party app.

I think I understood that all right, that is the easy part.

OK, I'm removing native-zip-support, see what that gives ...

Well, what EXACTLY does not work? Does it still search in ZIP files?

All I can say is that I tested this and it did work for me:

With native zip support enabled I created a zip with a specific file and I was able to find it in a search. I then removed native zip supoprt and was not able to find the file in a search.

I didn't do a test with placing a certain file into a zipfile, but what I have is HUGE zipfiles. Each of those files takes several minutes to "process".

Example: I put 10 zipfiles in a directory, each zipfile is at least 100 meg, but they can be up to several gigs. I just look into that directory for "sample.txt". There is NO other file in that directory, just those 10 zipfiles.

If the search takes minutes and minutes and minutes ... it is not working. If the search takes 2 seconds, it works. You can see Explorer scanning into the contents of each zipfile, and if you see that, you're underway, in some cases for hours (that is, if there are more than 10 big zipfiles).

He's also scanning each CLASS file, because they are also zipfiles in fact ...

Who is "He"? As I stated it works perfectly fine for me, so obviously something is different in your environment.

With native support enabled search will finds files I have in a zip file, with native support disabled it does not. If it is taking hours to do a search there may be other issues that are causing the delay.
