every now and then, when I shut down WIN XP, I revieve a notification that explorer.exe isn't responding. I just have to end it manually or wait for windows to end it but why does this keep on happening?

Easy CD/Direct CD can cause this problem It can also be a driver problem.Make sure you have all needed upgrades/patches.
