Oh, I had the same problem 1 year ago. Xp uses large amounts of memory, so you need to but more DDR chips. Buy a 512 or 256 to help your computer. A 256 costs about 30$ at compusa or other computer stores. Start buying memory chips to fix your problem.

If you do not have enough virtual memeory, increase it.

Right click My Computer. Click Properties > Advanced. The first Settings then Advanced Again. Go to the bottom of the Window and Click change. From there you can change your virtual memory.

It may be that you have run out of virtual memeory becasue you do not have enough space on drive C: to create it. If this is the case you can move the swapfile, for that is what virtual memory is, to another drive with more space.

If you do create a swap file on another drive, make sure you remove the existing one on drive C: Two swap files can slow things down considerably.

Make the virtual memory at least 256 MBs and a maximum of 512 MBs. Exactly what virtual memory is best depends on the type of use you put your computer to. It can benifit with fine tuning with experience.

If you cannot start Win XP then you have some other problem. The lack of virtual memory should not stop Win XP from starting.

The only thing I can suggest is to do a repair install and increase your virtual memeory at the first opportunity.

To do a repair install boot form your Win XP CD. Once the install programme has identifed the existing installation, select repair. This will then reinstall Win XP keeping all your files and settings.

Do not select repair the first time it appears or you will end up in repair console which is not ehat you want.

Stuart,

thanks but in fact due to some corrupted files (missing or corrupted fastfat.sys), I have finished repairing when I got the error message of not enough virtual memory when starting WIn XP Pro. I would try to repair again if there is no other solution.

Try deleting the pagefile.sys via the recovery console route, run chkdsk /r and reboot.
Pagefile.sys file is not directly accessible when you are in Recovery Console.

To work around this behavior, copy another file to the Pagefile.sys file. After you copy a file to Pagefile.sys, the Pagefile.sys file is displayed and can then be deleted.

To do this, use the following steps:

Boot into Recovery Console.
Because you boot into the %SystemRoot% folder (most commonly the C:\Winnt folder), type the following command:

cd \

Type the following command to overwrite the existing Pagefile.sys file with Boot.ini:

copy c:\boot.ini pagefile.sys

Type the following command:

del pagefile.sys

Restart the PC after chkdsk /r and see if it helps.

After doing a recovery via the XP setup, I managed to solve the problem. But now my system can't power off at shutdown issue. I might need to edit the registry.
