not detecting ide drives

this is on behalf of my son he has had this pc built for 2 months now and its worked ok now it wont go past the detecting ide drives screen he cant boot into the bios sreen or anything the primary was se to the hard drive and secondary was on the cd/rw cd drive is this just a motherboard failure or could it be that the ide cables or connection are faulty all connections are secure any help or ideas welcome as i cant get past this point peter

He hasnt gone snooping inside the computer like I loved to do when I was young has he? Check all cables to be plugged in and plugged in correctly. If they are, try unplugging the cdrom and see if the error changes. Also might be a good idea to try someone elses hard drive on your motherboard.

Even if there is a problem with drives, cables, etc. you should be able to boot to a DOS prompt from a Win 98 or Win ME boot disk. If you need one - www.bootdisk.com

thanks jrob disconnecting the cdrom allowed me to access the hard drive and to get access to the bios when i reconnect it again its no access again so what does this mean now peter
