Last night I chose to install updates before I shut down the computer. This morning, it appeared to be stuck on a loop because it was still "installing update 1 of 1", so I switched it off. When I turned it back on later, I got told at the login screen that I'm not using a genuine copy of windows XP and some stuff about needing to purchase a valid copy. But the thing is, my software is real, and the computer hasn't alerted me to any kind of problem like this until now. Another strange thing is, when I go to "turn off computer" at the login screen, it now says "turn off sss".
I tried to find a solution on microsoft help, and even email them...it searched for a product ID and then said "The product ID indicates that this product may be supported by your computer manufacturer", so I can't contact them for support.
Has anyone experienced this before or know what's causing it?
Thanks

This may help. You probably need to speak to Dell support.

Microsoft is admitting that the "Genuine validation tool" produces false positives.

Thanks for your help everyone :) I read dfor50's article...I don't seem to be getting any "annoying popups". In fact, since shutting down and turning on the computer again, I haven't even been notified at the login screen that my copy isn't genuine. Do you think the problem may have sorted itself out?
I'm just nervous that my computer may self destruct or microsoft will send pitchfork wielding agents round to my house to lynch me.
Thanks,

I'm guessing you want to remove it.
1. Find the program (Windows items usually found in system32 file)Since it's hard to delete it is because it is a running program.
2. Rename the file as something else so TaskMngr doesn't find it.
3. Terminate it's process in Ctrl+Alt+Del
Since you renamed it there is no possibility of it coming back. The good ol' do-it-yourself way. It's actually pretty fun.
4. Restart computer see how it goes.Am I smart? How the hell am I supposed to know and if you were smart you wouldn't be asking such stupid questions. -Mort from Trip to Appleblossom City.

all u have to do is rename the 'wgalogon.dll' file which is found in 'C:\WINDOWS\system32' and that gets rid of all of it. i tried all the other ways on the net and none of them worked so im the real master. (im not a nerd)
