I just installed mcafee antivirus without uninstalling norton antivirus. This has created major problems. My computer won't reboot. I can't get into other areas of my computer. I tried to unistall mcafee then norton, but I am not able to. Does anyone know how I can uninsall either one? I have tried the remove hardware path, but I don't get anywhere? Is there a back way to try?

Assume you've tried Add/Remove programs in control panel. It's software you want to remove, not hardware.

I have tried safe mode. I am still unable to unistall either antivirus program. Is there any other path to take or commands that I could try?

If you can boot to safe mode ok...try going into msconfig (start> run> type in "msconfig" without quotes) > hit the startup tab and uncheck anything to do with NAV and Mcafee> reboot to normal mode> then try uninstall the program of your choice...
might be better off to uninstall both programs and reinstall the one you want. You could also try system restore to b4 installing mcafee.
Good luck

Is it really a problem when you have both together?
Well, Windows takes for ever to start since I installed Norton with Macafee ALREADY on my computer...It takes 5 minutes to start windows...When I click on my user name it just says "Loading your personal settings." and takes like 5 mins to start everything up. Please help.

From what I have read and understand it shouldn't be a real problem having 2 antivirus programs on your computer BUT only one can be running at once. Having both running will cause problems, conflicts, freezeups, and likely false positives or even worse false negatives. If you want to keep both; make sure one of them is not starting up with windows. If you decide for example to keep norton in startup...uncheck anything to do with mcafee av in msconfig and reboot. mcafee wont startup with windows but as all the other programs it is available thru start> programs. If you decide to run mcafee to run scan...disable NAV autoprotect first.
There was a post quite a while back someone had 2 av programs running but that was over a month ago and I can't remember which ones they were..I think norton/avg or norton/kapersky...someone here might remember.
As far as windows taking a long time to start up...it will if both norton and mcafee are in the startup. You will also find some of your other programs run slower to such as email...both mcafee and norton are trying to scan the email, Internet explorer...again both av programs trying to scan the temporary internet files so your browsing, downloading will be slower. With the newer versions of norton/mcafee also msn mesanger and other IM programs if you use them will slow down too during any file transfer; both norton /mcafee are scanning the file.
Ok I think I beat that to death enough...
Also forgot to mention you will need to be logged on as administrator or user with full admin privliges to make the necessary changes.Good luck

There are 2 ways you can disable either norton or mcafee from startup...
1. start> run> type in "msconfig" without quotes> choose the startup tab> uncheck the entries for the one you dont want starting> apply> ok> reboot> check "dont show this window again"> ok when the window pops up about changing the way windows starts.
2. open up EITHER norton av or mcafee av and look thru the optiions...for mcafee..
right click on tray icon by clock, point to virus scan , click options, under active shield uncheck "start active shield when windows starts", "scan email attachments", "scan inbound instant message attachments" > If there is option in there for scanning system files at startup uncheck it.
apply> ok> reboot.
you will still have mcafee icon but the real time scanning engine is shut off and you will still have access to manual scan option.(the icon will be black not red)
For norton...
start up norton, click options, under autoprotect uncheck "enable autoprotect", "start autoprotect when windows starts"
under script blocking uncheck "enable script blocking"
under email uncheck "scan incomming email", scan outgoing email"
under miscellaneous uncheck "scan system files at startup"
If you have option for scanning instant message attachments uncheck that too.
apply> ok> reboot
Depending on your version of norton or mcafee; the options may be a little different..my norton is 2002 and my mcafee is virus scan is build 8.0.16, engine 4.2.60.
again norton icon will be available in the tray by the clock if left "show autoprotect in system tray" checked under autoprotect options. (Icon will have red x on it)
If you want both icons in the system tray go with option #2
If you decide you want to use the disabled scanner...don't forget to shut off the one you have working first...
norton...right click icon in tray, click "disable autoprotect"
mcafee...right click icon in tray, point to virus scan, click "disable" click yes on the popup warning.
dont forget to reenable real time protection when done using the other scanner.
Hope that wasn't too confusing....
sorry about the huge post but I don't know how much you knew about the options and stuff...sometimes better with more info than not enough.
Good luck

Thank you so much! I have uninstalled Norton as my dad had suggested and you have told me that it might have been the problem and it was the problem!
I love Computing.net!
