I got a message that my Nortons Antivirus 2002 needed to be updated. So we went ahead and updated. Then it said please reboot. Upon rebooting, we get the message: "we apologize for the inconvenience, windows did not start up successfully
a recent hardware or software change might have caused this
if your computer stopped responding, restarted unexpectedly, or was automatically restarted to protect your files and folders choose last known good configuration to revert to the most recent settings that worked" So we chose the option that reverted windows back to the last known working configuration and it just went back to this same screen, we chose safe mode and it just goes back to the same screen. We can't avoid this screen. We tried booting with the XP disk and get the recovery console but aren't exactly sure how to use it. Im at a loss what to do, any insight would be greatly appreciated....

With the WIN XP CD in to boot, press the option to REPAIR (r) and then follow the directions.
I think there are 3 options at 1st on the CD, it's the option to do OTHERS, I just can't remember the name, but you'll see it.

You may want to try using the system restore function which (i think) could be one of the options. restore it to before you updated Norton and see what happens

It will not go back to any restore points. I tried disabling all the services related to nortons in the recovery console. Still goes back to the same error page and just attempts to restart windows over and over and over. I tried following the setup to install windows waiting for an option to repair the installation, and it just is going to reinstall windows in the existing directory. I figure it has to be nortons but i can't get into safe mode to uninstall it. =(
