My computer is making clicking noises when I turn it on and it stays on this screen that says Non-system disk or disk error..... I had no disk in it. It restarted after I think it downloaded something. I have documents that I can not spare to lose on this computer and I have no copies. How can I get past this problem to save my documents. If I can't save them then what can I do to save my computer? It is a Compaq and I have XP. It's a desktop sooo.

If there's no floppy disk in the drive, it's probably the HD clicking and about to fail.
I recommend attempting no repair of file save on your own.
If anything gets saved, it will likey be by someone with experience and tools.
Good luck.

If at first you don't succeed, you're about average.

The error you see is due to Corrupt/Missing Boot files in the Booting medium or damage to the boot device itself.
Normally when the PC is powered on, the BIOS will check the health of hardware and finally if the system is OK as far as essential hardware are concerned, the boot-loader tries to boot the system by checking the Device set to boot in the order it is setup in the BIOS in any different ways possible of Floppy Disk Drive, CD/DVD drive, Hard disk Drive [Example FDD>CDD>HDD or CDD>FDD>HDD ....]
Therefore the first step in the troubleshoot is to check the drives containing Removable media for nonbootable disc/diskette.
If no CD/DVD/Floppy disk is on the way of boot search by the system , we have to conclude either there is a Severe software or hardware problem in the HDD that stops normal booting and making the "Non-system Disk error"The click-clack sounds from the PC may be a an indication of failing or failed HDD; but if you are an optimist, try and do a Windows Repair using your Windows XP CD or Compaq Restore CD hoping to salvage your personal files.
Reboot with the Win XP/Restore Disc and opt for repair option

What do u guys mean by User Backup Data? how do u do it? Does the computer do it every time you shut it down or do I have to manually wevery so often? If so I'm screwed.

If trying to recover files from this HDD is a top priority, put this HDD in another computer as a slave and see if you can copy them to another location or cook them to a CD or DVD.
If this HDD won't work in another computer, you should try a data recovery service.

"Non-system disk or disk error....." along with the reported clicking sound means the hard drive died.
You certainly can try the suggested procedures.
We all have learned the lesson on backing up important data. Once you have a system working again go to help and look up backup. Do a google search and read up on the different methods of preserving your data.
Yes it is something you have to do and the system does not do it for you automatically. Best of luck!
