Is your mic on a head set or a stand?

It could possible be static, i had the same problem with my headset & mic, Best method if wires are tangled is to untangle them.

There could be any number of causes of your noise.

In order to eliminate the software as the problem, you could try recording a short clip with the Windows Sound Recorder (Start > All Programs > Accessories > Entertainment > Sound Recorder). If this clip doesn't have the noise, the problem is obviously the software.

Of course, you could always use Audacity (which is free) to record your voice, then use its noise removal tools to clean up the clip.

In Audacity, you can use the noise removal tools to clean up the noise. Read the help files for instructions.

It probably is a hardware problem. It could be something as simple as a microphone cable with insufficient shielding. If that's the case, try keeping the mic cable as far as possible from other cables.

I remember I had a microphone which worked perfectly for a good six months then started to block up with a bunch of static noise, although it didn't cut out completely.

If you've fully explored all the software settings, I'm guessing that the microphone has gone to bust. Do you have another to test on the computer to rule out other software conflicts? It's pretty likely that a different mic will work fine.
