I've got a slotA 700mhz, 894MBpc133, 30GB7200. I've disabled the XP paging file in System Properties Advanced tab. Yet I still get thrashing when opening and closing programs.

try using defrag?
Your files might need re-ordering on the drive? run boot-time defrag to consolidate folders and files and the MFT

Think about it. The programs are on the hard drive. You can't use them unless the hard drive is accessed, unless you can find a way to load your entire had drive into RAM memory at startup.

Try that consolidation thing. Also it could just be that the other guy's PC's are in noisy locations or have quieter drives. I know taht the IBM drives I have are quieter that the some WD drives. My older quantum are loud as hell. When you installed XP was it from a newly formated drive or overtop of W9x? Run defrag and look at the report at the end. Check to see that rou have 4k clusters. If you upgraded from fat 32 chances are that you will have 512 k clusters and that is a big part of your problem.

I had a much quieter hard drive when I did a clean reinstall and went with NTFS instead of FAT32, like Chris pointed out.

using convert.exe I went to NTFS from FAT32. I went from 16k to 4k clusters. I must've defragged at least 4 times today. I noticed a difference but I still get thrashing.
