Hello!

I'm on a college network (LAN)...and I access my internet through an ethernet card. Just recently I've ran into a problem.

Here's the deal: I cannot access the web anymore. MSN Messenger connects just fine, as well as other chat programs such as AOL IM, Yahoo Messenger, etc. But, as soon as I load internet explorer (or Netscape for that matter)...I get nothing.

By nothing, I mean I see the "Connecting to site" at the bottom...and thats it. Eventually it times out and gives me the "Page Cannot Be Displayed".

Seems odd to me that I can connect to my chat programs (and chat normally), but I can't access the web.

There are 4 other jacks in the aparment for the ethernet connection - all my roommates computers work just fine...so it's not the university's connection.

Last night I formatted my hard drive, did a clean install of XP...and still the same scenario.

I'm usually pretty good at figuring this stuff out, but, I'm stumped this time.

Could it be my network card is just shot? I'm running a D-Link card I got about 2 years ago. The green led's on the back "flicker" like it's receiving a connection, but, I'm not getting anything as far as web access is concerned.

Any help would be appreciated!!

thanks a million!

When were you last able to access the web? (What were you doing before then, etc...) I'm surprised the reinstall didn't help. Are you sure all your IP address settings are correct (or do you use a DHCP server)?

Rule out hardware :

Convince a room mate to lug his box over to your jack and see if he can connect. If he can you can stop worrying about the LAN, its fine.

Then lug your box over to his jack and see if you can connect. If you cant then you know the problem is with your machine. If for some reason you can connect at another jack but not yours maybe the card & jack are mad at each other :).

After you determine the problem is with your machine and not the LAN try another cable, and another card in that order.

I agree that its probably just a setting somewhere but a clean install should have corrected any software or setting issues. If you can use an IM app and ping..CyberSlug is on the right track.

After you formatted.. did you just install windows and attempt to access or did you first load a bunch of software & updates? If you loaded software and or updates.. one of those might have been the problem all along and your back to square one.

One user said that when she finally replaced the jack her problems went away so anythings possible.

Thanks for the quick replies.

We have long ethernet cables, so, I was able to connect my roommate's pc to my jack. His connection worked, so, it's not my jack.

I tried connecting my pc to another jack, and still nothing :-(

When I re-installed Windows, I too figured it would overwrite any corrupted file, setting, etc, and fix this issue. However, it didn't.

As soon as Windows booted up (no software added)...I tried the net, and it didn't work. Hell, MSN Messenger didn't work at first, then eventually it signed on (still wondering about that one).

So, my guess is that it's gotta be the hardware of some kind. I'm gonna replace the network card...and see where that gets me.

This happened pretty spontaneously. It just happened out of the blue...and that makes it even trickier. I haven't added any software or anything in probably weeks or even a month.

I did add some RAM about a week ago and had some problems with it (mis-matched brands). It slowed my computer down to a crawl. I've taken it out however, but, I'm pretty postive I didn't knock anything lose in the process...I may try to re-seat the card, etc...

Once again, thanks for the replies...

If anyone else has any suggestions...PLEASE let me know...
