I'm a 98 user and don't use XP very often but I know that in 98 you can go to your desktop and then drag any icons you want from the desktop and then drop them into your task bar - does it work for XP too?

Right click on the task bar, go to Toolbars, then select Quick Launch.

I do not have time today to look to see where it
should be placed in Registry(work night, sleep days this week}.

Try this
In the RUN Command, type

smtray

That may open the tray like msconfig would.

smtray.exe is located in
C:\WINDOWS\System32

Spyware info.from Microsoft

Maybe check for, and remove SpyWare.
Here
you will find links for detection and removal software.

Here is another that is at most computer stores,
including Office Depot, Office Max:
Spyware X-terminator

Also, be sure to update any software online
after installation, and every 1-2 weeks.

Had another thought:

Make a Shortcut of smtray.exe and place it in the following folder:

C:\Documents and Settings\All Users\Start Menu\Programs\Startup

Now it will start up with Windows, and for all User Accounts.

Off to work now.

smtray.exe is not a Windows XP file but is a Analog Devices Sound Card file as described at the link below.

sinan, Go to the link below and under the letter "N" scroll down to "Notification Area - Icons Disappearing" where you'll find both Manual Edit and Automated Edit fixes to correct your problem.

Notification Area - Icons Disappearing Fixes

Note: On Windows XP the area of the Taskbar where your clock is located is called the Notification Area not the System Tray.
