Open up Task Manager (Ctrl+Shift+Esc) and check the Processes tab for explorer.exe which is the Windows shell that includes such interface items. If it's not there, go back to the Applications tab, click New Task, and type it in.

If the shell doesn't appear now, let us know. If you reboot the computer and have to manually start it each time, let us know.

What was your procedure in identifying and removing this malware? You may have remnants of it or other problems persisting.

Apologies if I don't respond to your reply immediately. I don't check this site daily, but you're welcome to PM me as a reminder.

I can run explorer using TM but that does not do me any good, as I do not see any way to regain task bar, icons, or start menu from explorer. Here is what is happening. this is a Dell with Win XP. If I should need to I can do a complete restore but I do not want to lose everything a do a hundred updates. Upon boot users screen comes up ok, Pick any user and continue boot. Then I get my wallpaper with nothing as listed above. Can run TM and run any installed pgm. I have run Ccleaner, explorer, control panel, and sfc /scannow but can find no way to regain above items.

FBI moneypac virus was removed using Ubuntu and changing name of sethc.exe to sethc.exe_backup then changing name of cmd.exe to sethc.exe. Worked to the extent virus is gone. MalwareBytes ran clean. but all I have is walpaper
