Since I had to reinstall xp I've lost my sound. Ploughing through the archives I've tried various things, mostly to do with drivers. However, when I tried to update drivers on the legacy audio bit I got the message the drivers are the latest ones. Also in device manager it tells me there is nothing wrong with the device.

When I go to control panel though, I still get the message no audio device.

I've tried different speakers and headphones, but still the same.

On the same reinstall I now find there is a yellow question mark on other devices, one being the ethernet. I've not yet tried to do anything with this yet as I've been concentrating on trying to get sound.

Advice would be appreciated please.

Install the chipset drivers for your motherboard.

It would help if you posted the Manufacturer/Model of your comptuer rather than just saying "Unknown."

Thank you so much SysLock. That has solved all the ongoing problems and more also that I wasn't aware of. Many thanks.

Jennifer, the reason I put unknown is because there are no identifying marks or manufacturers labels anywhere. It was built with new parts in an old casing and is much harder to define than my other pc which is all Packard Bell.

Gotcha. I'm always surprised at the number of people who use nonname brand parts. :)

Glad the chipset drivers helped.
