HELP!!!!
I have lost the sound on my laptop the icon is there the sound is “on” but everything is quite. I tried Windows media player, Real player and others, NADA, nothing ZILCH zero. Yes! The volume is on and I tried to turn it off and on again high and low.
Before that I have plugged the “end tale” of a ear phone not to hear the annoying startup ‘ding dong’s”.
Please help
cas

If you had a earphone wire cutoff it may have shorted out, ruining the sound chip. Can't say if that is what happened or not.
There are other ways to handle the different sounds for Windows events.
You can try removing the sound device from Device Manager and reboot. you May need to supply the sound chip driver at that time.

Have you unplugged the “end tale” of a ear phone so you can hear again.
If you want to get rid of the annoying ding dong go to Start / Control Panel / Sounds And Audio Devices / scroll down to Start Windows / and set it to none...

I had this happen to my telephone before. I used the head phones a lot and the plug went bad so that when you unplugged it, it would not release the energy back to the default speaker in the phone itself. Does the sound come though the ear phone if you plug it in? If so I bet that is your problem. I had to send the phone in on warranty and get a new one. I agree with Wombat, if you don't want to here something shut it off the way he says.

What do you call **end tale** ? what does that mean?
Some HELP in posting on Cnet plus free progs and instructions Glad to Help!

Thanks to all who are trying to help me.
OtheHill.
I have also thought that I may have created a short but when I plug in the ear phone I have the sound working.
What are “other ways to handle the different sounds for Windows events”
There is a list of 6 items under “sound, video and game controller” in Device Manager: audio codecs, legacy audio drivers, legacy video capture devices, sigmatel c-major audio, and video codecs. I do not know how to delete any of it.
Wombat.
I have unplugged the tale end,
Domass.
The warranty is expired on the laptop, I will know what to do in the future but how do I fix it now?
XpUser4Real.

Thanks again to all who are trying to elp

It sounds like you may have a condition like the one described in response #3. When you plug in a headphone jack the probe lifts up a contact and breaks the circuit to the speakers. It is possible the contact is not being restored when you remove the jack.
To reset ANY event sounds go to control panel> sounds and audio devices> sounds. Highlight the event you wish to change from the scrollable list> choose the sound or NONE from the scrollable list below> when finished with your changes hit OK.

This is definitely weird,
Before crying out for help the first time one of the things that I have tried is re installing the driver, and there was nothing I have tried again to install the driver and HURRAY!!! There is music in my ears, but it lasted only 2-3 minutes and pooff, it disappeared again only to be heard with an earphone.
Any suggestions???
Cas
ps OtheHill. I have tried your idea but it did not work
