I figured it was the sound card so I installed a new card arriving at the same message "sound card may be busy" how do I unbusy my sound card to see if either will work? anyone got any ideas what else might be causing this... I reinstalled windows to no avail thinking perhaps it was something gone wrong there... plz any help would be great

Try restarting the Windows Audio service:

On XP Home run this command:

net stop audiosrv && net start audiosrv

I have NOT lost my mind — I have it backed up on tape somewhere

Did you disable/remove the onboard sound before adding the new card?

Do you have a BIOS setting to disable the onboard sound?

Do both cards show up in device manager?
