Hi,

I recently found some old Sierra games (Quest For Glory 3 and King's Quest 6), but can't get the sound to work for them. Both are exe files and have many other files with them, but it says that it's "unable to initialize [my] audio hardware."

What can I do to fix this? My computer is almost brand-new, has an excellent sound system, etc... Any suggestions?

The fix for this was posted several times here at Computing.net just after Win XP came out. Try a search for it...

Is it a DOS based game? Windows XP is not so good with older DOS games. If that doesn't work then have you tried VDMSound?

As you may be unaware Windows XP has no MS-DOS sub-system and does not allow direct port access, both requisites help run MS-DOS based software, Also by default older software looks for a Sound Driver on IRQ5, most Windows Sound Drivers will sit on IRQ10, hence no sound.

Two choices pick up an old throwaway PC and install only DOS or use DOS-BOX software in XP:

Over the last 7 years since the emergence of Windows 2000 this has been covered many many times in these forums and no doubt will happen with VISTA!

I'm not willing to buy a new (old) PC just for these 3 games, but I'd love to get them working on my system now. So far, they run fine, but there's no sound! I downloaded VDMSound, but don't know how to get it working?

ok, no problemo, just use dosbox, it will emulate a soundblaster soundcard supported by almost every old dos game.

you may also have a look at ScummVM, this virtual machine was designed to run the old lucasarts adventures but also supports a lot of other click n point adventures (some are free or abandonware now) like Legend Of Kyrandia or Flight Of The Amazon Queen.
