In device manager there is a yellow mark by MPU-401 compatable mini device. Under properties it says this device cannot find enough resourse it can use.(code 12).If you want to use this device, you will need to disable one of the other devices on this system. I have no idea what to disable. I've done every thing in the troubleshooter, still no sound. Please help me.

You have a Problem with your sound card or Sound Cards (if you have installed a PCI sound card in addition to an onboard one if the Computer is a Desktop PC)
"I've done every thing in the troubleshooter"
Unless you spell out what exactly you have done, it will be hard to say what you need to do.
The best way to get some good help is to give us details about the system that is having the problem. From your specifications, it is not even clear whether you have a Laptop or Desktop Computer made by Dell. There is no information as to what family and series it belongs. These are details very readily available to you as they are often clearly displayed on the Computer case/cabinet.

I have a windows xp home desktop pc and an on board sound card. Is there any other information I need to include?

As posted before name of the PC or name of Sound Card or Name of Motherboard are needed.
If it is a Brand Name PC, what is the EXACT name of the Computer?
If it's a custom built PC, then post the Exact Make, Model and Version of the Motherboard.

Model=Dimension 2400
System Type=X86-based PC
Sound(OLE2)
I can't find info on Motherboard. I checked in search and system info. Could you please tell me where to look.

Thank you for posting your Computer details: Dell Dimension 2400 Desktop PC.
If your Dell Dimension 2400 Desktop PC has a factory installed Integrated Sound card it must be SoundMax ADI 198x Integrated Audio and it will be next to the USB ports in the center at the Rear of the Computer
If it is an Add-On PCI sound card it must be Creative Sound Blaster Live! will be located towards the bottom along with other PCI cards if any.More than likely it must be an integrated SoundMax audio device
After verifying the Sound card in your PC from its Sound Ports location at the rear of the PC , you may download the latest Win XP driver for the particular card and then install and reboot to test the sound.
If you already have the Drivers and Utilities CD follow these steps:
1.Insert the Drivers and Utilities CD in the CD drive.
To Install the ADI 198x Integrated Audio Driver

8.Click the Continue button.
The message Select the folder where you want to unzip the files to appears.
9.Click the OK button.
A message appears asking if you want to create the folder.
10. NOTE: If a message appears asking to overwrite the folder, click the Yes to All button.
11.Click the Yes button.
The message All files were successfully unzipped appears.12.Click the OK button.

Yes I do have the SoundMax audio device.
I went to Dell and downloaded the Sound Blaster. After all was through, it could not work, It said the Sound Blaster Audio card was not there. I looked up sound in search, there is a WOW sound driver module listed, if that is any help.

Did you not download & install the ADI Audio Device driver from the link I posted?
That is the driver for SoundMax.
You cannot Install Creative SoundBlaster driver in that PC and make the sound work! I had clearly stated that if there is no PCI Soundcard (which is the SoundBalster) you must have an Onboard SounMax Sound card and it's driver link is the one marked ADI Audio Device Driver posted earlier.

First of all I should tell you I'm a compleate novice.....
I have a Laptop Dell packard M series with windows XP. I had to to do a system restore because the Laptop had to many bugs on it. Before the restore the sound was working fine. Now it's not working at all. I have no idea what sort of sound card it has I'm assuming it's whatever Dell put in it when manufactured. Also I am unable to double click on add hardware it says there is another program installing and I can only install one thing at a time. There isn't anything installing on the computer so I have no idea what it's telling me. Are you able to help me out?
Gail

Gail,
I will try to help you, if you could post the Computer's Name EXACTLY as displayed on its case/cabinet. I am not familiar with a Laptop Dell packard M series :-(Please indicate if you have any Drivers & Utilities Disc from Dell for this Lapatop Computer.
M

The name on the case of the laptop is "Packard Bell" under the laptop it says "easynote M5-300DR. Thats the model ( I think)
In the system under General. Says Microsoft Windows XP Home edition Version 2002 Service Pack 2 Intel(R)CPU 3.06GHz 224MB of Ram. No Disc's came with the laptop. It has a self restore that takes the laptop back to factory settings which is what I have done twice and still have the same problem. Many thanks for taking the time to try and help!!!Gail

Since Packard Bell is not available in the US, I was checking their European site. From Packard Bell UK I could get some information about Packard Bell Easynote M5 Laptops which are built between 8/2003 -5/2004. But their Models are all 4 figured! Example :Packard Bell Easynote M5 Series Model 5255 or 5262, 5263, 5265,5284 etc. Their sound cards are either Texas Instrument TPA0212 Amplifier or Realtek ALC202 Audio System 18-bit, full duplex AC'97 2.2 compatible stereo audio CODEC.
If my above description fits the geographic location of the origin of your Packard Bell laptop, you can click the link below to download the Audio Driver I think may most likely help you restore your sound. You will also see there, documentation about installing the driver. Try that and see. Please let us know the outcome.
Realtek ALC202 audio driver (full installation)
