No sound after re-installing Win XP

After re-installing Windows XP Home, the volume control disappeared. In Sounds setup from the Control Panel, the message says there is no audio device. Sound hardware built into new motherboard has worked for several months until the Win XP re-install. Troubleshoot does not provide any doable solution for "no audio device" but says to open "Printers and Other Hardware" which does not exist, only "Printers". Adding hardware does not work as the sound items are listed and properties indicate they are working properly. Thanks for advice in getting Windows XP to include the volume control and "audio device" during installation.

reinstall your audio driver, you'll be able to download it from the motherboard or pc manufacturers support site.

I have exactly the same problem, in all details, and i did download an re-install a suitable driver for the computer (MTC Medion), but the same problem exists: The computer cannot find any card, and since it is integrated into the board (as it appears) i cannot even remove the sound card an re-install it again... So help is needed!
