I was searching "computers not shutting down," which was my then-problem. There were hundreds of suggestions. I found one simple/easy suggestion. I tried it and it worked.
Unfortunately, I don't know whom to thank. But he/she will know when I explain the suggestion that worked so well.

When you go to START instead of hitting TURN OFF COMPUTER, hit LOG OFF. Then when the screen tells you someone else is using computer, tell it to turn off anyway.

There is one small glitch. When I did all the above, the computer started shutting down but hung up at the very last step. After waiting quite a while I finally hit the off button on the computer.

The next day I held my breath to see if it would come back to life. It did and has been working fine ever since.

So thanks once again, whoever you are.

bosart, glad to hear you found something you're happy with. FWIW, Windows seems to have been plagued with shutdown problems of one sort or another since day 1. I use a standalone shutdown proggie (for convenience) called 'Slawdog' (said to work on all versions). Get it free @:
http://www.slawdog.com/products/sma...
among other places. Works good and I drag/dropped the icon into my quicklaunch so it'd be handy for use.

Bosart,

Like Ed in Texas, glad that someone was able to help solve your issue...best yet is that you posted the fix back so that we can note it for someone else later on. Thanks!

slawdog is a nice program!

Hi Ed,

Glad to learn there is a program for "no shutdown" problems. I'll definitely look into it.

BTW do you use for all shutdowns or only the stubborn ones?
