I have just installed WinXP SP1, fresh install on formatted drive, went to Windows Update and downloaded all critical updates. I installed Office XP and started Outlook XP. Now, I have a network share that holds my .pst file and to point Outlook to that location I used to do this:
1. Start Outlook once and the exit (creates a .pst file)
2. Do a search for *.pst on local drive and delete the file.
3. Start Outlook, confirm messsage about missing .pst file, point it to the network share containing the .pst file.
4. Restart Outlook and everything is fine, all mails and contacts in place. Now, I can't find the local *.pst file, where is it, have searched all drives and made sure that all hidden files are visible. I managed in Outlook options to point the mail store folder to the network share but the contacts aren't available. By the way, new contacts doesn't get saved, they just vanishes. Tried reinstalling Outlook to no avail. Still no PST file and while I can get the network share PST in place, the contacts are not available and new contacts just vanishes.
Note: This procedure used to work on a basic WinXP installation with the SP1 pack applied on top, the difference this time is that the SP1 is integrated in the install.
Any suggestions are most welcome.
Thanks,
/Marcus

follow this path on your machine.
C:\Documents and Settings\User Name\Local Settings\Application Data\Microsoft\Outlook
This is where Outlook stores the .pst file on my computer. I am running XP SP1 as you are so yours should be the same.
Hope this helps.

Thanks for the reply. I found the file. It's funny though, I did a search for *.pst on the drive like I've done before, but this time none was found. The .pst file is present on the drive in the path you described, but when right-clicking on it and selecting "properties" the file type is "unknown". Is this the reason why the .pst file wasn't found in the search?
Thanks again!
/Marcus

I have the answer to my last question: I forgot to enable the search option to search in hidden system files. Now I can find the *.pst file! Live and learn..
