after running AVG free antivirus (even though my computer had no problems, i just wanted to check it), now none of my programs will open. ive tried several registry fixes including full licensed version of Registry Mechanic. it supposedly found numerous registry errors and fixed them all, but still no programs will open. i went ahead and reinstalled Microsoft Office and all those programs work again, but i dont have installation software for most of my other programs. need some help!!

just tried it, but the uninstall failed to remove avg.exe. it is a program and like all my programs i get an error that windows was unable to open the program and that i may not have permission to open it. i went in to the registry and checked permissions on several executables and it showed i have full control, read and write on all of them but still no access.
i installed the LNK file also to no avail.

andrehughes,
If the LNKShortcut fix that LL recommended doesn't solve the problem try the EXE File Association Fix from the same link.Tufenuf

tried system restore and set it to 3 days ago. that was one of the first things i tried. nothing.

A re-install of XP over the top of the current installation should do the trick. After the install, go to MS Updates to update all critical updates.

reinstalling windows or even just doing the repair option will require reinstallation of all the software. done it many times. i cant believe how stubborn this problem is. any of the previously mentioned fixes, especially Registry Mechanic should have fixed it. looks like i will have to reinstall all the software if nobody has any other ideas. thanks to all for your help.

A re-install (repair) should not cause you to reinstall all programs. The repair is not a format and install, it's simply an install over the top of the current installation.

I sincerley hope all the users on this Forum who recomment AVG and Avast will note this computer, with AVG is infected beyond hope, with an old virus. Users need to learn if their pc's are valuable, then they need to spend money to protect them with a good quality antivirus and by doing Windows Updates.
Experienced users can do well with junk like AVG because frankly they know how to practice safe computing and when we advise "newbies" to use it, in my opinion we are committing a grave error.Rich M
