Hello Im am fixing a friends laptop because the dial up modem just stopped working for her. I notice that the device manager says everything is fine with it and I even updated to the newest drivers. It is set to COM 3. But then I noticed there is no PORT tree in the device manager? I have never seen this before. This may be why the dial up does not work. The WLAN and Ethernet work but she lives in the woods with no service. Imagine her luck, the only thing that doesnt work is what she needs.

Should have disks for the motherboard & maybe the modem, go to Add Hardware & use the Manual options to install.

If your motherboard only has COM Ports 1 and 2 listed in BIOS, then COM 3 and onwards are Virtual Ports, and therefore not listed in Device Manager, it has been this way for years................

...also some Laptops have removable modems, therefore it is feasible it has died!

There is no Port options in the BIOS, So I have no idea how many it has. When I do a find new hardware it finds nothing, And when I manually install it it installs a COM3 port but it says it cannot tell how it is supposed to be configured. The modem should be good, XP detects and installs the drivers just fine but again there is no port tree in the device manager so I have no way to tell if its on or off.

Control Panel > Phone and Modem Options > Modems, if the Modem & Port are shown, you can click on > Properties > Diagnostics.
