When trying to install/format my external HD.. no partition had shown up on Disk Management.. so there was no way for me to format or assign a letter.. is there anyway to rectify this? Be it software or through DOS?

I agree with Sabetooth. How do you have it hooked up - via firewire or USB? Is your hard drive being displayed in the bios? When I attached a Western Digital external hard drive to my computer via firewire or USB (tried both for shoots and giggles), the bios saw the hard drive in both instances and was displayed when I booted into Windows.

Just a thought?
Some external hard drives have an on/ off switch
This needs to be set to ON for the drive to show up in Explorer, etc.,

Can you see the External HD in windows explorer? if yes, right click and select "format"
if no, try some partition manager to format the drive
