Hello,
My friend's computer has had a heart attack. The Keyboard was locked up, the front panel LEDs indicated that the power supply was bad, it would not boot up, etc.
I updated to the latest BIOS and this cured the above problems, but it will not boot beyond the IBM logos screen.
The error message displayed is as follows:
1962: No Operating System Found.
When looking into the System utility, the indication is that the Intel IDE (PCI device) is not detected.
The Chipsets are:
• Intel 845 chip set
• Intel 82845 Memory Controller Hub (MCH)I am able to access the Hard Drive (IBM Deskstar 40 GB, 7200 rpm, ATA, IDE Model: 07N9682) when I put it into another computer as a slave device.
On this other computer all the files appear to be in tact and a virus check showed no viruses.
Is there a way to load XP Pro onto this slave device?
It looks like the XP Pro Installation CD does not have a provison to change the drive letter to install it on the slave drive.
I defragged the Hard Drive using the Windows XP Pro Defragger and there are no unmovable (green) files on it. Is this a Problem?
I ran fdisk and it was OK.
I put the Hard Drive back into the IBM NetVista 6792-G86 computer:
I tried both controller connectors on the Mother Board with the same results.
I tried another cable from the mother board to the hard drive with the same results.
I used a hammer on it with the same results. Need a little humor here.
I do not have the Recovery CDs.
I called IBM and they are not of much help since the computer is out of warranty.
Also, I tried to reload the XP Pro via the OEM DVD-ROM drive but it could not read the CD. At turn on the DVD-ROM LED lights.
The DVD-ROM is a IBM Model GDR-8161B Type IMKO (FRU: 33P3281, IBM P/N: 33P3280). It also has a Hitachi Model #: GDR-8161B (Same as the IBM Model #), built in Oct 2002.
The IBM & Hitachi Websites do not have any info on this DVD-ROM.
Any suggestions please???
I originally posted this on the General Hardware Forum and was advised to try the XP Forum. Thanks,
Lucas

When I had problems with been unable to install XP CD from DVD-RW drive I cahnged to a normal CD-Drive and for some reason worked fine, worth a try if possible?
Build a man a fire, he'll be warm for a day.
Set a man on fire, he'll be warm for the rest of his life.

Since the harddrive is not even detected by bios no amount of fiddling with the DVD drive or instal/recovery disk will help.
I suspect the motherboard is shot. The evidence of the DVD drive LED light showing at startup only confirms that it is getting power. If the IDE Controllers on the motherboard have failed there is nothing you can do but replace the board.I used to have a signature but it disappeared and I just couldn't be bothered writing another so please feel free to ingore this.

Whew all that work!
standard operating procedure is to boot ANY Xp cd and go into recovery console. Run fixmbr and fixboot.
See if you can boot. this is assuming the ide controller is good.
Next thing to do is boot via a floppy disk and mount the OS. You can download this from bootdisk.com. Copy off your boot.ini to the floppy disk and you should be able to mount the drive.
Last resort is a repair install. This is where you start install and when given the choice of new or repair choose repair. You will have to redo your updates but apps/data remain intact.
Give a person a fish, they eat for a day. Suggest they internet search and they learn a skill for a lifetime.

I'm a bit confused with your original message. In one part you stated It looks like the XP Pro Installation CD.. yet in another part you wrote I do not have the Recovery CDs. What do you really have?

Try this site "netvista systems"

When you updated the Bios, didn't it instruct you to reset the CMOS connector for 15 seconds or so? All of my updates of the Bios always tells me to remove the power cord, move the jumper to reset the CMOS for 15 seconds or more and then move it back. Power up the computer and you should be good to go. Just checking.
