A friend has 3 computers. Two with Win XP Pro and one with Win 98SE.

He installed some kind of accounting package that runs under DOS. Didn't work. Trahed part of the XP install.

We were able to recover the Desktop and most of the programs. But there is absolutely nothing in the My Network Places.

We've installed a new NIC.
We reinstalled the TCP/IP, NetBeui and even added IPX etc.

WinXp shows a connection at 100mbps.

Turned off firewall and simple file sharing.

No modem, no internet installed. Just a wrk station.

But no computers show up in the Network box.

Any ideas?

Larry

In Windows, place the XP CD in, run setup and choose "Repair" when prompted.

LL,

Did that. That's how we got the desktop and other programs back.

Really strange. Everything else seems OK.

Oh yeah, everyone is in the same workgroup etc. and both the other computer can see each other. Aslo replaced the cable to the new NIC card just in case.

Thanks

I had same problem. My fix was to reinstall XP over old one using CD. All programs and settings remained the same. It only fixed the problems. Couldn't figure out what caused it.

BillyBob,

I'll try it again. Thanks to you and LL so far.

Didn't work. Formating and re-installing is not an option.

Any other ideas anyone?

You can see a My Network Places on the desktop, it is just empty?

Open My Network Places, click Add a Network Place and see if you can re-create the network.

Will do, LL.

And yes, that's what happens. It's empty.
