no netwk icon in status bar

When I boot up there is no network connections icon on the status bar so I can't connect to my ISP.
when i click on shortcut to isp the system freezes.
system restore does not work - goes thro motions but when rebotes stops at welcome screen
can only get out by pulling the power
scandisk doesn't seem to work either.
any advice would ne appreciated
can get into safe mode and complete system restore but is still a problem with network connection

Are there any other computers on your network (home?) if so can you communicate with them (ping)? My first inclination is that your NIC took a spirit walk. I guess that everything else works on the PC, try to boot the PC without the NIC and see if you can shut down normally. Try a different NIC. Maybe reseat your nic or put it in a different slot? If you have updated the NIC drivers try rolling them back.

Tried booting without the NIC & everything is fine.
