All of a sudden the keyboard/mouse will become unresponsive after the windows xp logo comes on the screen.
The keyboard can be used to enter the BIOS or change the boot device, but once the Windows XP Logo comes on the screen, the lights on the mouse/keyboard go out.
I ran CHKDSK and ran the Dell HD Diags which returned and Error Code 7.
Any thought before replaceing the drive and reinstalling the OS?

Are they USB? What errors , if any, are displayed in the Device Manager?
Keep Smiling
It makes them think you're up to something...

they are both USB devices. There are no errors. You cannot login to windows since these devices do not work.

Well I've got the same problem. But sometimes, don't ask me why suddenly the mouse has come back to life :S.
The problem though is what I read by looking through google is the bios version of your motherboard. Well I have an old packard bell with the msi 6430 so it says (an Haley???) I've flashed the bios and still no live after the XP logo. Now the bios is on version 3.2 Checking this with msi they are already on version 4.7!!!
The only problem?? They don't make an bootable file to flash your bios so you have to make an dos-disk in xp. I have a ps/2 keyboard somewhere in the basement, so I can manage that :)
Starting up again. it can't find the drive c:
So now I go against better judgement to flash from the disk and hoping that that will solve it all, I'll keep you posted

Oooops, sorry, I have to fill you later in on that.
It's getting too late here, so I have to do this tomorrow (Netherlands;))
But if my earlier post helped you a bit,I hope you've beaten me first with it :D
Succes :)
