Hi all,

I've been searching and searching for a solution to my problems, but I cannot seem to find anything quite the same. I have tried many possible fixes, but none have worked as of yet.

My problem is that once booted into windows, my mouse and keyboard no longer function. The keyboard functions enough to go into bios, or to open the f8 menu, but that is all. Also, if I try to start in safe mode, it begins to load, then a blue screen quickly flashes and it restarts. I have tried a USB keyboard/mouse as well as a PS/2 keyboard/mouse (these are wireless, not sure if that matters), neither set works. Both sets work on another computer.

This all started seemingly randomly. I installed SP2 on the machine and all was well for a couple days, then this happened.

I'm not sure what other information anyone would need or what else to try. Please let me know and I will do all I can do help you help me heheh.

You need to try a wired Keyboard and Mouse. Preferably PS/2.

You could try a System Restore to an earlier
date when you computer was working OK.
Start - All Programs - Accessories -
System Tools - System Restore.

How would the OP do that without a KBoard or mouse to input with?

At the risk of being chewed on I will make a
suggestion that you and others can decide if it has any merit.
Remove your old hard drive and install a new one.
Using the CD that came with your computer reinstall windows.
This is assuming that your Mouse and Keyboard will now work with the new hard drive.
If your computer came without a CD, write the manufacturer and order one.
(When I needed one eMachine sent me one for $20.00)
If the above works, put in your old hard drive as a slave and remove what files you need.
Do as you think best with the old hard drive.
If your computer has an electrical part gone bad than the windows updates wasn't the problem just a coincidence.
My experience is limited as you can tell by my answer.

Thanks for the suggestions everyone and sorry it has taken me so long to get back. I do not have internet at the house so I have limited availability.

Anyhow, OtheHill - I currently only have a USB keyboard that is wired. Like I said it works up until the point where windows starts. Before that point I can use the KB to access BIOS, or tell it to start safe mode, etc. I can also toggle the num lock button up until windows loads(I read somewhere that if I cannot do that, windows is not detecting the keyboard). I will get ahold of a wired PS/2 KB and mouse and report back.

cboy - Yeah, OtheHill is right, cannot do that unfortunately. Also, I will try your second suggestion after I try the wired PS/2 KB and mouse. I thought of that but was hoping that there was a cheaper and more simple answer heheh.

Thanks for the help everyone. I ended up getting it to work by plugging in a touch pad a friend had. That worked and I went to the device manager and saw all the USB items had the exclamation points. So I uninstalled/reinstalled the drivers and all seems to be well. Havn't checked on that safe mode problem, but no biggie. Thanks again!
