No Mouse + Keyboard during Install
Name: AoErat Date: November 8, 2004 at 21:23:22 Pacific OS: Windows XP CPU/Ram: Athlon64 3400+
Comment:
I'm doing a repair install of Windows XP, it copies the files fine, restarts, I insert the CD, the regular blue install screen appears, starting with the bullet "Installing Windows", where it is copying files.
During "Installing Devices", the install prompts about software install for my Creative Audigy card, with options "Yes/No", but I can't click either button nor can I use the keyboard to interface with the installer.

I might also mention that I also tried USB keyboard/mouse to no avail.

Turn the computer off, unplug both PS/2 devices, re-plug in, and restart. PS/2 should work with XP, it is a "generic" concept that works with all versions of Windows, from DOS to XP.

It may be a daft question, but have you accidentally inserted the PS2 mouse and keyboard plugs into the opposite sockets? My Win2k machine won't even boot if I do this!

Tried turning computer off, unplugging, replugging, no luck, same result.
Keyboard and Mouse are in correct ps/2 ports. Color coded, and etched icons match up as well.

I did that. It then skipped that message but brought up another about video card drivers. So I figure I gotta get it working from the start.

Working with one or the other yields the same results.
I let it sit on that screen all night (8+ hours) and nothing happened, so it ain't loading anything.
I did try a different mouse/keyboard, didn't work. (both sets verified to work on other computers)

Try rebooting from the XP CD and doing a repair over the repair.

If you feel comfortable...take your HD out of ur comp and put it in someone elses comp and back up all ur data, then format it, then put it back in ur comp and see if it will install properly?

Yep, already did that (file backup).
I'm just hoping to salvage the current install. I'm also worried that I'll have the same problem on a blank harddrive ...

I ended up reformatting the drive and re-installing Windows XP Home. Mouse and Keyboard worked fine doing the "clean" install as opposed to the repair install.
Thanks for all your help!
