when i try to change the volume on my computer i click on the little sound icon in the bottom right corner
i recently reformated and am getting this
There are no active mixer devices available. To install mixer devices, go to Control Panel, click Printers and Other Hardware, an click Add Hardware.
well that isn't working... when i bring up the hardware list there aren't any yellow question marks...

What sound card does you Dell have? You can either use your Dell driver cd or go to the soundcard manufacturer's website and search for support/drivers and get them there to install the mixer.

The mixer is usually part of the driver download and installation. Windows will normally just install the audio drivers no mixer is provided if you just used XP to install the audio drivers.

As previously advised

I'm not one of those who think Bill Gates is the devil. I simply suspect that if Microsoft ever met up with the devil, it wouldn't need an interpreter

thats what was confusing about it... i checked the card and downloaded the apropriat driver from the dell site... checked the installation disk to make sure they matched up... and they did... it was Analog Devices ADI 198x Integrated Audio
and it was after that when the probleme occured
I'm going to continue with the rest of the advice you have provided thank you

somehow the problem resolved itself??? i think it was the windows updates that did it... how i don't know... but its working fine now... ty for your input anyway, its a good reassurance to know that that is what fixed it...

That's good to hear!
Another possible cause of the problem.
The XP firewall, or another firewall, may be blocking something the sound needs.
See response 3 and 4 in this:

hmm it appears that this probleme is linked to another semi probleme... a svchost.exe shows under mem usage in task manager 55,000K and from what i can tell thats a bit on the steep end for a svchost... at first i panicked thinking it was malware or something (had it before like that) and ended it... well thats when this error popped back up... anyone know what the corrolation is and if i can fix it?

Long time no hear from you.
This is pasted here from another post I answered:
No, svchost.exe usually isn't malicious.
svchost.exe (Generic Host Process for Win32 Services) is a generic "slave" program that is commonly used by other programs to do some things in XP.
If you press Ctrl-Alt-Del at the same time to pop up Windows Task Manager, select Processes, you will probably see several svchost.exe are listed, using differing amounts of Mem Usage.
It is possible the program that is using a particular instance of svchost.exe is malicious, in which case a symptom MIGHT be that you see a constant CPU % used which may vary as you watch in Windows Task Manager even when you are doing nothing with the computer, but it isn't svchost.exe itself that is determining that.
Some processes are used for many purposes by other programs e.g. svchost.exe, dllhost.exe, winmgmt.exe.

Some malware uses the Universal Plug and Play feature of XP to facilitate it's dirty work - if you turn it off, that stops the malware. A utility here to turn it off:
