Windows XP(SP2) with Fast-User-Switching enabled. I occasionally run into problems where after logging (or switching) out of one user I find myself looking at a blank (black) screen instead of the login screen. There is no way (I've found) to log into any user from the console until I power off and restart the machine, which can be rather inconvenient...seems it always happens when I have another session going where I have unsaved work!
I said this happens when loggin off or switching out of an account. In fact, far as I can recall, it's always been when logging off a user.
There are actually two distinct problems here. In one case, I log off and the screen goes black (which it always does, I presume because the video card changes modes or wahtever) and stays black, no cursor, no effect from any keyboard or mouse action (including Ctrl-Alt-Del any number of times). I can, however, connect and log in using Remote Desktop (RDC). It seems like a problem with the video driver/system (Intel Graphics) when it's being reset between the user and the login screen.
I belive I have all BIOS power saving options turned off. In windows I have start screen-saver after 10min and require login to get back in and blank monitor after 30min. But I've never had a problem after timing out, only when deliberately logging off.
A similar problem is happening lately. I get a blank screen after logging out a session but the mouse pointer is there and moves as I move the mouse but no login dialog and the keyboard is totally ignored. In this case RDC connects but again no login dialog appears. It's as though whatever process controls displaying the login screen and logging in users has exited or failed to start. This one seems to crop up when there's been some hangup/delay in the logging out process, such as a process not ending. I end the process and logout continues (or I logout again) but winds up in this annoying blank screen.
In both cases, I can tell that all users processes are running fine in open/switched out sessions.
It would be really really great if there was a way I could fix these problems and (in the first case) get a login display on the console or (in second case) anyway I could log back into my switched out session from the console or remotely.
Would also be nice to know exactly what's happening and how to avoid it in future.
Thanks for any ideas...
