Application compatibility
Compatibility issues with third-party PPPoE clients
Audience: Home users where third party VPN application is the method for remote accessMany PPPoE clients from 3rd party vendors do not operate correctly or install in Windows XP. If your ISP requires PPPoE to make a connection to the Internet, you can use the Windows XP built in PPPoE client or request a Windows XP compatible release from the vendor or ISP.
If you use one of the following products, contact the vendor for a Windows XP-compatible version of their software:
WinPoET version 2.1a or earlier
EnterNet 300 version 1.34 or earlier.
To make a connection with the built-in PPPoE client:Click Start and then click Control Panel.
Click Network and Internet Connections.
Click Network Connections.
In Network Tasks, click Create a new connection. The New Connection Wizard will start.
Select the following options, clicking Next after each:
Connect to the Internet
Set up my connection manually
Connect using a broadband connection that requires a user name and password
Continue to follow the wizard steps. You may leave the ISP Name field blank and Windows XP will attempt to detect the connection.

I am having the same problem but I do not believe it is PPPoE related. I am reasonably sure the problem is directly related to the XP machine being able to communicate with the LAN, rather than the wide band connection itself. Let me explain.
I have a 10/100 LAN set up with up to five connected computers. Only one machine has XP installed and this is the only machine with the problem. I share my DSL connection via a Linksys Router and switch. Therefore the PPPoE client never runs on the XP machine. When the XP machine refuses to communicate with the internet, I also cannot share files on it or even see it from the other computers.
I have found a fix but it is a pain to implement and must be done after every reboot. If the driver for the LAN card is uninstalled, and then reinstalled, everything starts to work. I changed LAN cards from the Linksys NC100 to a 3Com 3CSOHO100 but it made no difference.
Is this a common problem with XP? I hope this might give someone some insight so maybe a solution can be found.

Yes this is a common problem and my ISP provider(southwestern Bell DSL) Knows about the problem but Windows Xp is so new there is nothing out right now to fix the problem i was having...And yes it is Windows Xp...There is a compatiblity issue and Microsoft knows about this because its in The help menu and its only with certain ISP's....I had windows Me then i switched to Windows XP yesterday...My dsl was workin fine but after i installed xp it wasnt...When i was installing my service provider software i kept gettin and error that it wasnt finding my network card....The suggestion i gave is for similiar problems and if people cant connect using a broadband connection they should read the help file On the Windows XP cd for further information to see if it applies to them....This hopefully is a temporary problem....Thank u

Chad, if you are having the same problem I am having (as I described above), it does not appear to have anything to do with the ISP or DSL connection. I say this because all my W98 SE machines have no problem either seeing each other to share files or access my DSL connection via my LAN. When the XP machine cannot access the internet, it also cannot see or be seen by the other machines on the LAN (peer-peer, Linksys router/switch). Therefore it seesm to be a networking problem, not a DSL/ISP problem.

Im not saying its the connection Barry....I had windows me and my connection worked fine as i said above...What im saying is its the ISP software...The southwestern Bell software is not compatible with XP or visa versa and probably wont be for another month...what i mentioned above is only for certain problems which is mentioned by microsoft...so if it doesnt apply to ur problem...then stop reading it...this is just a suggestion...I use Enternet 300 for dsl...i couldnt connect using the ISP software so i used the PPPoE software thats built into XP and now i have a connection and it works great...Hopefully this is a temp. problem...thank U

Chad, I'm having the exact same problem that you were having. I also use Enternet 300 software, mine is provided by TDS.Net, but I can't select broadband using name and password. It's greyed out. TDS blamed it on my NIC card (realtek rtl8139), but microsoft, and XP diagnostics says it's fine. I'm kinda lost right now. If my ISP admits there's a problem with there software, I'd wait for them to release a fix. But until then, I'm searchin for answers :)

That is very weird that it is grey out....When i was installing the software it came up with and Error 25(NIC Problem) but i went to see if my NiC card was recongnized and it was fine...Robert did u do a fresh install? I dunno why yours would be grey out...Im glad i finally got connected...The only thing i dont like about the built in PPPoE is that when u reboot you wont reconnect automatically and i cant find the setting(if its possible)to change it...I know its not ur NIC card...Hopefully they will have some updated software for this problem very soon...There is a compatability problem with the ISP software but Xp is so new..Hopefully they will fix this problem soon...Hopefully u figure something out before that happens cuz it might be a bit of a wait...Good luck on your search...I hope you figure it out...

Very new to the broadband world I installed XP about a week ago when i got XP also and both have been working fine with the native drivers PPPoE however certain programs will not operate correctly. The closest thing i can find to be a possible cause for the problem is an error message in an irc client. "Could not resolve your host name using IP instead". From what I undertstand this problem is from my ISP's DNS server not registering me. My ISP is telstra(Australia) and uses enternet 300 not compatible with XP. Has anyone else expeirenced such a problem? If so is there a work around while I wait for an XP version of Enternet? Any suggestions or help appreciated.

I just fixed this problem! It was NIC IRQ sharing all along.... see here for info http://www.homenethelp.com/web/howto/irq-sharing.asp
I moved my PCI cards around the slots, restarted and got many 'New Hardware...' messages, then it just connected to the net !!

Well, I am having the same problem... but with @Home. I have a Linksys router, a XP box and IE 6 not connecting to the Internet. Although every other progam (Opera browser, msn) connect fine through the same box...
Mystery...
Any ideas?

My problem is similar! the broadjump software isnt supported in WINXP yet so Im trying to use the integrated PPPOE support but when I click connect it sasy "specified destination not found"
Where do I change this destination or what's wrong?? how can I get this to work?
