Hello. I have xp pro. I have always connected to internet through an Arris modem. This is a cable modem which is also for telephone. You connect computer directly to it by using ethernet cable. It has connections for the phone cord and the cable coax cord in the back.
Anyways, the connection was working flawlessly until I reinstalled XP. Now, I cannot get connection. I went through the internet connection wizard as I'm supposed to, but no good. I don't think I had to install any particular drivers for this device before. I have called my provider, but they say they are now forbidden to tell customers how to alter computer settings to restore/repair internet connections for legal reasons.
Unplugging and replugging modem, resetting modem, restarting computer don't seem to make a difference.
Any suggestions? I would be searching all over the internet, but I have a very small window of opportunity to use this computer, which is a classroom computer (college). Between work and school, I don't have time to hit the library or the computer lab on the other campus, so I'm stuck hitting this one for two minutes at a time, three or four times tonight.Anyways, your suggestions are much appreciated. Thanks.

Make sure that the device is installed. Look in the Device Manager, and see if the Modem is installed properly, if not there might be a unknown device in the device manager. you might have to download the driver for that particular modem, and install that to get the modem to work.
To get to Device Manager:
-right click My Computer
-Properties
-Hardware
-Device ManagerGood luck!

Yes, Check the device Manager for problems.
Reinstall your motherboard drivers, if you haven't done that.

This is a cable modem as the poster described. As such it will not appear in Device Manager.
cleatondumas check and see if you are in fact getting an IP address from this modem. Start>Run>cmd>ipconfig. If proper IP shows there then check the modem to see if in fact it is getting an Ip address from your ISP.

More than likely, you need to install the LAN (Network card) drivers. If the LAN is built-in to the motherboard, the drivers will be on the motherboard driver disc.
Please let us know if you found someone's advice to be helpful.
