This morning I dutifully downloaded Windows Updates (Malicious Software Removal and a Security Update KB951748) and restarted my PC as requested. Now I can't connect to the Internet from my PC.

I'm networked with a laptop and one other PC and the LAN is working fine - I can transfer files etc. I've tried Diagnosing Connection Problems and all it comes back with is a problem with the router (which there isn't as I'm connected to the LAN and Internet via the laptop). I haven't downloaded the Windows Updates on the laptop or the other PC yet as I don't want to lose my Internet connection on those as well (I'm using the laptop to post this!).

Does anyone know if I can remove these Updates and return my PC to how it was before I installed them (other than System Restore)?

Any help would be appreciated but in layman's terms please or I won't understand!!

MSW, M$ may have screwed up the update, sorta doubt it. Before you get your panties all in a bunch, take a look at your security settings in IE. Perhaps they reset them in the update? Anything higher than 'Medium' can block things. Just a SWAG.

I have exactly the same problem MSW,also a friend of mine had the same problem, this morning too, but he was lucky enough to have a restore point which after he had loaded sorted the problem out. I don't have a restore point so I am stuck like you!

You should be able to uninstall the updates in control panel - add or remove programs. Click on show updates at the top.

Assume you mean internet access. This appears to be a known issue if you are running Zonealarm. If you are running Zonealarm, two possible workarounds are as follows: Set the Internet security setting in Zonealarm to "Medium" OR uninstall security release KB951748. Lot's of discussion of this issue on Zonealarm's Users Forum.

Many thanks marty525. I've uninstalled the Security Update KB951748 and am now posting this reply from my PC - yay :-)

Of course, now Windows is telling me there are Updates ready to download - don't think I'll bother with that one again!

wfjdeed - I am running ZoneAlarm and will bear your comments in mind should future issues arise - thanks.

You can mark that update to never show again so you won't accidently download it again.

Ironic, same exact thing occured just now with my laptop (on hubby's now). I'm removing the update as we speak...

... wall-ah! My laptop is up and running with the internet again. Imagine that. I'll give Microsoft some time to fix this before I download the update!

Thanks for the original post and replies all.

Had a phone call at 7:30 this morning from a friend with the same problem after updating both his computers. Needed the machines for daytrading! Was able to restore the machines to earlier settings using System restore.

Same here, couldn't connect today after the last windows update. Shut down zone alarm and was able to connect but as soon as I restarted ZA, all connection would close. Is this issuew with the new MS update or is it with ZA?. Had to restore computer to before the last windows update and now have no problem. Will remove this update from my computer. LOL

The problem is ZA. ZA posted a workaround today. See link below for details.

ZA has now issued an update of their own to address the issue. The workaround no longer needed.

This is a dirty little trick by Microsoft. Don't get me wrong, I really have nothing against MS personally. In fact that company has enabled me to make a living. But I find it hard to believe they don't know what the 3rd party software toys like ZA out there are doing to help protect the very operating system MS produces.

I actually had a MS MVP state something to the effect of "you mean it's MS responsbility to make sure 3rd party software works with our operating system? Get real." I find that a very arrogant attitude. ZA and other firewalls are in existence because the firewall MS supplies for their own OS is inferior. Remember, they use dot not supply one at all in previous OS versions!

There's probably a darn good reason why ZA is not working in conjunction with the kb951748 patch. Yes, I realize exactly what that patch does and it's a good fixer for a large hole, but I personally feel that because of this patch a whole lot of consumers were without (or still are) internet capabilities. Befor ethe patch, no problem. Who's really to blame here?

/rant off

I need to find the any key
