I would be very grateful for help with the following problem:
Computer
Dell Dimension 8200 2.0GHz Windows XP Home SP1 512Mb 120Gb Home LAN.
SYMPTOMS:
Icons, Taskbar and Start Menu missing in Normal mode.
Background wallpaper visible.
Taskmgr available through CTL+ALT+DEL
Explorer.exe show about 5Mb in processes.
Explorer.exe hangs when shutting down saying Not Responding requiring End Programme Now to be selected.
Booting takes a very long time, both to User selection then to wallpaper.
Safe Mode works.
Explorer.exe runs at about 20Mb in Safe Mode processes.
Nothing recently installed / altered.
Most programs seem to run through Taskmgr but IE6.0 hangs.TROUBLESHOOTING already tried:
Ending explorer.exe and restarting it in Normal mode via Taskmgr does not restore icons, taskbar and start menu. However in Safe mode it does. This applies to current and previous versions of explorer.exe.
System Restore did not work.
Last Good did not work.
Clean booting through msconfig did not resolve the problem.
Creating a New User both with and without administration gave same symptoms.
Sfc /scannow did not show anything missing.
Reinstalling Windows XP Home (upgrade method) made no difference.
Norton Antivirus 2003 does not find a problem.
Spybot does not find any obvious problems.
There is no sysu.exe file on the computer.
Thank you in anticipation.
