Maybe they are not gone and are just marked as hidden files/folders?

cnvshell.dll is not part of the normal installation of xp. Did a search and wasn't found on my system. Must belong to something you install. Try this. Right click on empty space on desktop, select "Arrange Icons By", make sure there is a check mark by "Show Desktop Icons"

Please let us know if our advice was able to help you.

Along with Trek's steps, open up Task Manager, go to the Processes tab, and verify that explorer.exe is running. If not, go to the Applications tab > New Task button > type: explorer.exe
