Specs: Windows XP, 1G DDR1
hi,

my computer randomly restarted by itself while i was surfing the web yesterday. ever since, everything boots up correctly but when i log in to my account, nothing happens whatsoever. the only thing i can see is my desktop background and it takes up the whole screen with nothing else.

i tried booting up in safe mode but the exact same thing happens - i see the "safe mode" text on the borders of my screen but just a black screen appears besides that.

i would reformat no problem but i need to get my files anyhow.

can someone tell me either how i can access my files to back them up on disc/jump drives so i can reformat, or how to fix this problem another way?

if i "repaired" xp, would this work?

i'm thinking maybe i could use my CentOS live boot cd i just found to access my drive and burn my stuff to DVD or put them on my removable hard drive... maybe someone could walk me through that

a repair install should work for you, just remember, you will have to reload ALL your critical updates again:
