No folder icons in explorer bars

I run windows XP and recently, the icons which display next to folders in the explorer bars have disappeared.
The problem appears in the folders, history and favourites panes, as well as a few selected windows dialogues, such as the "move file to..." dialogue (picture: http://www.zam44.ukgateway.net/explorer.jpg )
I don't REMEMBER changing such a setting and certainly can't find any reference to the setting in windows, tweakUI, or the MS knowledgebase. Has anyone else met the same problem, or know or the fix?
