Specs: Windows XP
I have an emachine 1200-05w and can't open any files, All the icons on the desktop are gone, replaced with a paper out of a folder. I can't download anything. I tried about a million of those free scans and fixes, but they start to download, finish and then send you to a web page telling you about an exe or dll or ifn files, but can't get anyting to tell me what is wrong. I cant even get the restore to work...Hope some one can please throw me a bone, so to speak....Thanks in advance...

✔ Best Answer
You should back up all your data to another drive, then re-install Windows XP.

Avoid those free scans you find on the web in future - most are scams and they often make things worse.

Only use programs recommended on a computer forum.

Always pop back and let us know the outcome - thanks

Thanks and had to do a complete factory restore...still don't know what caused it, but what will be will be on the old computer..couldn't back up anything, cuz nothing would open or download, but seems to be working better than ever...lost all the junk...movies, music, etc. Thanks again...

If you didn't delete all the partitions, you may not yet be out of the woods.

Make sure when you reinstall, you delete ALL partitions & format to NTFS.
D to Delete the selected partition ( XP )

Here are some examples of why you delete all partitions.
